On the occasion
of the fast of August 29, the day on which the Church commemorates the
Beheading of the Precious Head of Saint John the Forerunner, I present in full
the valuable article by Professor Panagiotis I. Skaltsis, entitled “Fasting and
the Church Calendar.”
Through this
study, the historical course of fasting in the life of the Church is presented:
which were the ancient fasts connected with Apostolic Tradition; how and when
the other fasting periods, as well as individual fasting days, appeared; what
the practice of fasting was in ancient times; and what variations existed in
local Churches and Monastic Typika.
The article
helps the reader understand:
a) that fasting
is not simply an outward religious custom, but a deeply ecclesiastical and
ascetic practice, connected with the Church calendar, liturgical tradition, and
the spiritual preparation of the faithful;
b) that through
the centuries there were variations in Monastic Typika and local ecclesiastical
traditions;
c) that there
were also discussions about whether certain fasting periods should be extended
or abolished.

Fasting and the
Church Calendar
By Panagiotis
I. Skaltsis,
Associate
Professor, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Fasting, as an
ancient ascetic practice and a spiritual struggle for overcoming the alienation
produced in the human soul by passions and vices, became associated with
specific days of the week, such as Wednesday and Friday. It was also connected
both with the preparation of candidates for baptism and with the great festal
events of our Church calendar.
The fast of
Wednesday and Friday is known to us from the end of the first century A.D. as a
continuation of certain pagan customs, but also as a replacement for the Jewish
fasting days, namely Monday and Thursday: “But let not your fasts be with the
hypocrites, for they fast on Monday and Thursday; rather, you should fast on
Wednesday and Friday.” According to pagan customs in Alexandria of Egypt, the
god Hermes was honored on Wednesday and the goddess Aphrodite on Friday.
Christians gave new meaning to these days by connecting them with the Passion
of the Lord. Wednesday is regarded as the beginning of the Passion, while
Friday is regarded as its completion: “He commanded us to fast on Wednesday and
Friday, the one because of the betrayal, the other because of the Passion.”
This fast is
observed throughout the whole year “in order to remind man of the event of
salvation.” It has such importance that it is placed on the same level as the
fast of Great Lent: “If any bishop, presbyter, deacon, subdeacon, reader, or
chanter does not fast during the holy Lent of Pascha, or on Wednesday or
Friday, let him be deposed, unless he is prevented by bodily illness.”
From the same
sources, and especially from the Didache of the Twelve Apostles, we also learn
about the pre-baptismal fast, which lasted one or two days. This fast was
prescribed not only for the person being baptized, but also for anyone else who
wished to fast: “Before baptism, let the one baptizing and the one being
baptized fast beforehand, and any others who are able; and you shall command
the one being baptized to fast for one or two days beforehand.” As spiritual
preparation, the fast of those approaching baptism could last more days, even
up to ten. Its connection with the forty-day fast of the Lord after His baptism
points to the fast of Great Lent, whose roots are found precisely in the
original pre-Paschal pre-baptismal fast of two or three days.
As a baptismal
day, Pascha became connected from the second and third centuries with the fast
mentioned above, that is, the fast of one, two, or even more days. Thus, we now
speak of the fast of Holy Week, which, from the second half of the third
century, was expanded according to the model of the Lord’s fast, and the
forty-day fast before Pascha was formed. During this period, according to the
45th canon of the Council of Laodicea, “those who are about to be illumined on
Great Saturday must be purified beforehand throughout the whole of Lent through
fasting and ascetic practice.” In other words, the catechumens who were about
to approach the Mysteries devoted themselves to this pre-festal purification.
More
specifically, regarding Holy Week, there was an exhortation that it be observed
by all “with fear and trembling” for six days, until the cockcrow from Great
Saturday to the Sunday of Pascha. This fast of Holy Week allowed only bread,
vegetables, and salt, while on Friday and Saturday the faithful remained
without food.
At this point,
it should be noted that Holy Week is supplementary to the forty-day fast, which
begins on Clean Monday and ends on the Friday of the Sixth Week of the fasts:
“Having completed the soul-profiting Forty Days, we ask to behold the holy week
of Your Passion, O Lover of mankind” — Doxastikon of the Praises on the Friday
before Palm Sunday. The formation of the liturgical period before Pascha took
place gradually, taking into account the disagreements that existed within the
Church concerning the number of fasting weeks, namely whether, for purely
symbolic reasons, they should be six, seven, or eight. In any case, around the
seventh to eighth century, and in an effort to distinguish the Church’s
practice from various heretics, the pre-Paschal fasting cycle of eight weeks
was finalized. This cycle includes:
a) the week of
Cheesefare, during which there is abstinence from meat “as a preliminary
purification for us and as preparation for the holy fast”;
b) the six
weeks of the main part of Great Lent, as a symbol of the tithe of time and as a
reference to the six days of creation;
and c) Holy
Week, which points to the eighth day and the age to come: “This, then, is the
fast of our Lord of the forty days, and the week after it is that of His holy
Passion.”
By the term
fasting during the period of Great Lent, what is obviously meant is one meal a
day and dry eating after the ninth hour and Vespers throughout the week, except
on Saturday and Sunday. It is not, however, strange or outside tradition that
in the liturgical Typika we often find differences and variations. Thus, for
example, in the Typika of Kecharitomene, Pantokrator, Mamas, and Heliou Bomon
of Constantinople, the custom prevailed of “two dishes, both containing oil”
every Tuesday and Thursday. Also, on the feast of the Annunciation, the canons
permit the eating of fish, even if the feast, according to the Fifth Canon of
Nikephoros of Constantinople, fell on Great Thursday or Great Friday. This,
however, changed toward the end of the Byzantine period, when, according to
related testimonies, “if the Annunciation falls within Holy Week, we do not eat
fish, but only oil and wine; nor do we eat oil on Great Thursday, according to
the Fiftieth Canon of the Council of Laodicea.” In our days, of course, this
issue does not arise because of the difference between the Old and New
Calendars. As for the eating of fish on Palm Sunday, this is not attested in
the Byzantine monastic Typika, except in the Typikon of the Monastery of
Pantokrator and in the chronological instruction of the Monastery of Stoudios.
On Great Thursday as well, the Fiftieth Canon of Laodicea and the Ninth Canon
of the Quinisext Council prescribe dry eating, as for the whole of Lent. The
monastic Typika, however, also prescribe the use of oil, because on that day
the institution of the mystery of the Mystical Supper is celebrated and a
“complete” Divine Liturgy, that of Saint Basil the Great, is served.
In imitation of
the fast before Pascha, the fast of Christmas was also established. At first,
in the fourth century, it lasted only a few days and was observed by
exhortation; from the seventh century onward, it became a forty-day fast. It is
described as the fast of Saint Philip by the 29th Canon of Nikephoros the
Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople, evidently because it begins on the day
after the feast of Saint Philip, that is, on November 15. The holy Apostle
Philip is commemorated on November 14. According to the monastic Typika, at
least in the majority of them, there is dry eating on Wednesday and Friday,
while on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday the use of wine and oil is permitted.
Fish is permitted only on Saturdays and Sundays, and this continues until
December 17. This is evidently in honor of the “great week” before Christmas.
Besides, according to Balsamon in the twelfth century, the essential part of
this fast lasted seven days, without the forty-day fast being forbidden: “For
seven days before, one must necessarily fast and practice abstinence… for there
is one forty-day fast, that of holy and great Pascha. But if someone fasts for
more than seven days… he will not be put to shame.”
How the
practice arose of ending the eating of fish on the feast of Saint Spyridon is
unknown to us. We think that the first practice is closer to the tradition and
to the information given to us by the sources. There is also a special feature
concerning the fast on the eve of Christmas and Theophany. Thus, while as a
rule there is dry eating, if the eve of these two feasts falls on a Saturday or
Sunday, wine and oil are permitted. However, because of the Divine Liturgy of
Saint Basil the Great on the eve of the above feasts, some Typika prescribe the
use of wine and oil on any day of the week. During the period of Ottoman rule,
the following different order is attested: “Concerning the eve of Theophany and
Christmas, whatever day it may fall on, it is kept as a fast; oil and fish are
not eaten, only wine is drunk. But if it falls on Saturday or Sunday, after
Vespers we eat oil and drink wine.” Regarding the fast on the eve of Theophany,
which is the only fast within the Twelve Days because of the festive character
of that period, it should be pointed out that it is connected with the baptism
of the catechumens and not with the Great Blessing of the Waters. Otherwise, we
would also have a fast on the day before the eve.
It was indeed
an old custom for a preparatory fast to precede feasts as spiritual preparation
for Christians. Nikon of the Black Mountain, from eleventh-century Antioch,
also refers to this tradition: “We find many fasts,” he notes, “observed not
from the tradition of divine canons, but from the custom of certain people and
from tradition in certain lands; not with an evil intention, but in faith and
love, with those fasting striving beforehand in honor of certain great saints,
so that they may meet their feasts in purity.”
The so-called
fast of the Holy Apostles also belongs to this logic. It begins on the Monday
after the Sunday of All Saints and ends on June 28. This fast is older than the
Christmas fast, and it is called a “Lent” only in a loose sense, since its
duration depends on the date of Pascha. According to Athanasius the Great, this
fast began immediately after Pentecost and lasted one week. According to the
Apostolic Constitutions, after Pentecost there was one week of relaxation and
joy “because of the gift of God,” and then a fast of one week followed. This
fast was related to Pentecost “because during it the Apostles made the
beginning of their preaching. For this reason, the days after Pentecost were
dedicated by Christians to the Apostles and to their work.”
There is
special mention in seventh-century texts of the post-festal fast of Pentecost,
which developed into the fast of the Apostles. Anastasios of Sinai, for
example, informs us that this fast was extended until the feast of the
Dormition of the Theotokos, in a certain way joining the fasting periods of
these feasts. It was cut short, however, “partly because it coincided with the
foreign fasts, that is, those of the Armenians, Jacobites, Nestorians, and
often also the Ishmaelites; and partly, as it seems to me, because of the
negligence and lack of zeal of people.” According to Balsamon, the feast of the
Holy Apostles and the fast before it are connected with the Feast of Weeks of
the Old Testament, “which was celebrated on the fiftieth day from Pascha, in
remembrance of the giving by God to Moses of the Ten Commandments on Sinai, and
for the glorification of God for the harvest, that is, for the reaping of the
grain.”
As for the diet
of the above-mentioned fast, some Typika, the older ones, prescribe dry eating
on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; the use of wine and oil on Tuesday and
Thursday; and fish on Saturday and Sunday. According to the Typikon of the
Monastery of Stoudios, however, “during the Lent of the Holy Apostles we do not
eat fish, eggs, or cheese, except on the days on which we do not chant the
Hours.” On Saturday and Sunday, according to this Typikon, the Hours are not
observed, and for this reason there is permission to eat meat, cheese, and
eggs. The same applies as in the Lent of Saint Philip, that is, the Christmas
fast, with the difference that during the fast of the Apostles two meals were
served, one at the seventh hour of the day and one immediately after Vespers,
whereas during the Christmas fast there was one meal after Vespers.
From the ninth
century we also know of the fast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, which,
paradoxically, is absent from the old Typika of Constantinople, Jerusalem, and
the Holy Mountain. It is attested only by the Typikon of the Monastery of
Christ the Savior in Messina, southern Italy, and it seems to have been
observed in the secular, or asmatic, worship and in the monasteries of Olympus
in Bithynia. The monk Nikon of the Black Mountain contributed greatly to the
spread of this fast in Antioch, despite opposition from monastic circles. The
patriarchal Synod of 1105, under Nicholas III Grammatikos, imposed the fast of
the Dormition of the Theotokos as canonical.
At the same
time, Anastasios, bishop of Caesarea in Palestine, points out that “the fast
before the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos has been handed down by the
holy fathers and divine patriarchs, and all the cities and lands of the
Orthodox observe it with honor, especially the great and prosperous city of
Constantinople and the Great Church.” This fast eventually prevailed, after the
fast of the Transfiguration was joined to it. The Transfiguration was a feast
established in the ninth century and was celebrated for eight days in the
Jerusalem Typikon and for four days in the Studite Typikon. However, because
some people extended the permission to eat meat, which was prescribed for the
day of the Transfiguration as a feast of the Lord, Leo the Wise united the two
fasts, lawfully abolished the post-festal eating of meat, and decreed that “the
entire fast of fifteen days” should be observed by all and kept with purity.
We have already
mentioned the fast of Wednesday and Friday, the pre-baptismal fast, and the
fasting period of the great feasts of Pascha, Christmas, the Holy Apostles, and
the Dormition of the Theotokos, together with the fast of the Transfiguration.
There are, however, other one-day or many-day fasts with special liturgical
interest. We mention first the feast of the Exaltation of the Precious Cross,
which holds the same status as Great Friday. According to the monk Nikon of the
Black Mountain, in Antioch there was a fast both on the day itself and before
the feast. According to another testimony, the fast, a strict one in fact, is
limited to the day of the Exaltation, on which “we eat neither cheese nor
fish.” A third source from the eleventh or twelfth century informs us of
complete permission to eat all foods on the feast of the Exaltation, “and until
the feast is given leave-taking, we relax the fast with oil and wine.” What has
prevailed everywhere from the period of Ottoman rule until today is strict
fasting, with permission for wine and oil if the feast falls on a Saturday or
Sunday.
The second
feast, this time hagiological, on which fasting is prescribed is the
commemoration of the Beheading of the Precious Head of John the Forerunner, on
August 29. In the Studite Typikon there was no fast on this day, because the
feast was regarded as great, and the Monastery of Stoudios was dedicated to the
Honorable Forerunner. The Typikon of Saint Sabbas also prescribes that “on
whatever day this venerable feast may fall, whether Sunday or Saturday, we do
not eat cheese, eggs, or fish, but only oil and wine, giving thanks to Christ
our God.” What is observed today, namely abstinence from every kind of food, is
a custom from the period of Ottoman rule. It is also recorded in the current
Typikon of the Great Church of Christ, the Typikon of G. Violakis, where the
following is noted: “On this most venerable feast, which bears the same
character as holy and Great Friday, we observe a fast; only if it falls on
Saturday or Sunday is there permission for wine and oil” (p. 76).
Through the
variety of cases concerning fasting in the calendar of our Church, the richness
of our liturgical tradition is revealed, along with the beauty of this
spiritual weapon for the purification of the passions, the illumination of the
mind, and the experience of the great meanings that flow from the feasts. Each
feast, and all of them together, bring into our life the truth of the mystery
of Christ and call us to become participants in it: to celebrate our salvation
in Christ in a manner worthy of God, and to train our soul and body through the
contest of fasting. This ascetic practice helps us “to draw ourselves near to
God… and not to be enslaved to the passions.” It opens the way to true freedom,
justice, and love. It brings us closer to the path that leads to
self-knowledge, communion with our fellow human beings, and our mystical union
with God.
