The Dormition of the Theotokos According to Saint Juvenal, Archbishop of Jerusalem (+457)

Empress Pulcheria erected many churches in Constantinople, among them the Church of the Panagia of Blachernae.

Emperors Marcian and Pulcheria earnestly sought the “all-holy and God-receiving” body of the Theotokos in order to place it in the church. For this purpose, they summoned to Constantinople Juvenal, Archbishop of Jerusalem, as well as the bishops residing in the city at the time in view of the Council of Chalcedon. To all of them, the emperors expressed their intention to transfer the body of the Theotokos to the Church of Blachernae, “as a safeguard for this reigning city.”

Juvenal replied that Scripture makes no mention of the events of the Dormition of the Theotokos, but that “from ancient and most truthful tradition we have received” that when the time of her Dormition came, the apostles were “caught up” to Jerusalem, arriving while the Theotokos was still alive, and they conducted the burial of her body in Gethsemane, “where it remained without interruption for three days.” On the third day, the Apostle Thomas, who had been absent at the time of the Dormition, arrived in Jerusalem and asked to venerate the body. “The bier was opened,” but the body was not found—only the “grave clothes” remained, emitting fragrance. The bier was closed again, and the apostles concluded from this that the Lord “was pleased, even after her departure from this life, to honor her most pure body with incorruption and to translate it before the common and universal Resurrection.”

Present at all these events—apart from the apostles—were Timothy (the first bishop of Ephesus) and Dionysius the Areopagite, who described in detail how the apostles “suitably hymned” the Theotokos.

Having heard Juvenal’s account, the emperors requested that he send them whatever remained of the garments from the bier of the Theotokos.
