Ο Άγιος Ονήσιμος, Απόστολος εκ των Εβδομήκοντα,
στη νεότητά του ήταν δούλος του Φιλήμονα, ενός Χριστιανού από διακεκριμένη
γενιά, που ζούσε στην πόλη των Κολοσσών της Φρυγίας. Ένοχος αδικήματος εναντίον
του κυρίου του και φοβούμενος την τιμωρία, ο Άγιος Ονήσιμος έφυγε στη Ρώμη,
αλλά ως δραπέτης δούλος κατέληξε στη φυλακή. Στη φυλακή συνάντησε τον Απόστολο
Παύλο, φωτίστηκε από αυτόν και βαπτίστηκε.
Στη φυλακή ο Άγιος Ονήσιμος υπηρετούσε τον Απόστολο Παύλο σαν γιος. Ο Άγιος Παύλος γνώριζε προσωπικά τον Φιλήμονα και του έγραψε μια επιστολή γεμάτη αγάπη, ζητώντας του να συγχωρήσει τον δραπέτη δούλο και να τον δεχτεί σαν αδελφό. Έστειλε τον Άγιο Ονήσιμο με αυτή την επιστολή στον κύριό του, στερώντας τον εαυτό του από βοήθεια, την οποία είχε μεγάλη ανάγκη.
Αφού έλαβε την επιστολή, ο Άγιος Φιλήμων όχι μόνο συγχώρησε τον Ονήσιμο, αλλά τον έστειλε πίσω στη Ρώμη στον απόστολο. Ο Άγιος Φιλήμων αργότερα χειροτονήθηκε επίσκοπος της πόλης της Γάζας.
Μετά τον θάνατο του Αποστόλου Παύλου, ο Άγιος Ονήσιμος υπηρέτησε τους αποστόλους μέχρι το τέλος τους και χειροτονήθηκε επίσκοπος. Μετά τον θάνατο των αγίων αποστόλων, κήρυξε το Ευαγγέλιο σε πολλές χώρες και πόλεις: στην Ισπανία, στην Καρπετανία, στις Κολοσσές, στην Πάτρα. Στα γηρατειά του, ο Άγιος Ονήσιμος κατείχε τον επισκοπικό θρόνο της Εφέσου, μετά τον Απόστολο Τιμόθεο. Όταν μετέφεραν τον Άγιο Ιγνάτιο τον Θεοφόρο στη Ρώμη για εκτέλεση, ο Επίσκοπος Ονήσιμος πήγε να τον συναντήσει μαζί με άλλους Χριστιανούς, όπως αναφέρει ο Άγιος Ιγνάτιος στην Επιστολή του προς Εφεσίους.
Κατά τη βασιλεία του αυτοκράτορα Τραϊανού (89-117), ο Άγιος Ονήσιμος συνελήφθη και οδηγήθηκε σε δίκη ενώπιον του έπαρχου Τερτύλλου. Κράτησε τον άγιο στη φυλακή για δεκαοκτώ ημέρες και μετά τον έστειλε στη φυλακή της πόλης Ποτέολι. Μετά από λίγο καιρό, ο έπαρχος κάλεσε τον κρατούμενο και, βεβαιωμένος ότι ο Άγιος Ονήσιμος διατηρούσε την πίστη του στον Χριστό, διέταξε να τον θανατώσουν χτυπώντας τον με ρόπαλα. Μια διακεκριμένη γυναίκα πήρε το σώμα του μάρτυρα και το τοποθέτησε σε ασημένια λάρνακα. Αυτό συνέβη το έτος 109.
In prison Saint Onesimus served the Apostle Paul like a son. Saint Paul was personally acquainted with Philemon, and wrote him a letter filled with love, asking him to forgive the runaway slave and to accept him like a brother. He sent Saint Onesimus with this letter to his master, depriving himself of help, of which he was very much in need.
After he received the letter, Saint Philemon not only forgave Onesimus, but also sent him back to Rome to the apostle. Saint Philemon was afterwards consecrated bishop of the city of Gaza.
After the death of the Apostle Paul, Saint Onesimus served the apostles until their end, and he was made a bishop. After the death of the holy apostles he preached the Gospel in many lands and cities: in Spain, Carpetania, Colossae, Patras. In his old age, Saint Onesimus occupied the bishop’s throne at Ephesus, after the Apostle Timothy. When they took Saint Ignatius the God-Bearer to Rome for execution, Bishop Onesimus came to meet with him with other Christians, as Saint Ignatius mentions in his Epistle to the Ephesians.
During the reign of the emperor Trajan (89-117), Saint Onesimus was arrested and brought to trial before the eparch Tertillus. He held the saint in prison for eighteen days, and then sent him to prison in the city of Puteoli. After a certain while, the eparch sent for the prisoner and, convincing himself that Saint Onesimus maintained his faith in Christ, had him beaten to death with clubs. A certain illustrious woman took the body of the martyr and placed it in a silver coffin. This took place in the year 109.

Saint Onesimus,
Apostle of the Seventy in his youth was a servant of Philemon, a Christian of
distinguished lineage, living in the city of Colossae, Phrygia. Guilty of an
offence against his master and fearing punishment, Saint Onesimus fled to Rome,
but as a runaway slave he wound up in prison. In prison he encountered the
Apostle Paul, was enlightened by him, and was baptised.In prison Saint Onesimus served the Apostle Paul like a son.
