On the feast of
the Prophet Elijah, the Church presents a passage from the Catholic Epistle of
James (5:16–20), which emphasizes the power of prayer and the value of
repentance. James, the Brother of the Lord and first Bishop of Jerusalem,
teaches us: “The effective prayer of a righteous person avails much.” He then
offers the Prophet Elijah as an example.
Elijah, he
says, was a man “with passions like ours.” He was not a superhuman being, nor
was he holy by nature. He was a man of prayer, faith, and obedience to the will
of God. For this reason, his prayer had power. When he prayed that it might not
rain, the rain stopped for three and a half years. And when he prayed again,
heaven gave rain and the earth bore fruit.
The prayer of
the righteous
The Fathers of
the Church see in Elijah’s prayer not merely a miracle, but a spiritual state.
St. Basil the Great notes that the prayer of the righteous is not simply the
utterance of words, but the fruit of a pure heart, union with God, and love for
the world. St. John Chrysostom emphasizes that Elijah was not showing off his
power, but expressing his anguish for the salvation of the people, who had
turned away from the truth and worshiped idols.
Prayer, then,
is not a magical act. It is an act of communion with God and the fruit of
faith. And God, who “searches hearts,” hears the prayer of one who lives in
repentance and righteousness.
Drought and
rain: symbols of spiritual condition
The drought in
Elijah’s time was not only a natural phenomenon, but also a form of spiritual
instruction. The land dried up because the hearts of the people had dried out
through apostasy. And when the people repented, after the sacrifice on Mount
Carmel and the recognition of the true God, then the rain came—as a blessing
and a renewal.
This event has
lasting significance. The person who turns away from God experiences spiritual
dryness. Peace, joy, and hope are lost. But when one returns, when one prays
with humility and sincerity, then the “rain” of grace comes, and the soul
becomes spiritually fruitful.
Concern for the
salvation of the one who has gone astray
The passage
ends with a striking appeal: “Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way
will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.” It is not enough to
pray only for ourselves. True love calls us to care for the brother or sister
who has gone astray and lost the path of truth.
St. John
Climacus writes in the Ladder that “no prayer is more pleasing to God than the
one made for another.” Whoever helps a fellow human being return to the truth
becomes a συνεργός, a co-worker with God in the work of salvation.
Today, more
than ever, we need the prayer of the righteous, the faith of Elijah, and the
repentance that brings the rain of grace. Let us not see the Prophet Elijah
merely as a figure of the past, but as a living example for us. God still
hears. And prayer, when offered with a pure heart and living hope, can change
not only the world around us—but also the world within us.
