Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos: Luke 10:38–42; 11:27–28

The Gospel reading for the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos does not describe the historical event of the Dormition of the Panagia. Instead, the Church presents the passage about Martha and Mary, together with the blessing spoken by the woman from the crowd: “Blessed is the womb that bore You.” Through this choice, the Church reveals to us the deeper greatness of the Theotokos: it lies not only in her physical motherhood, but above all in her obedience to the word of God.

Martha receives Christ into her home and serves Him. Her action is good and hospitable. Service is not rejected; after all, love is expressed through deeds as well. Yet Martha “is worried and troubled about many things.” The problem is not work itself, but inner distraction. Service, when it loses its center, can become anxiety, comparison, and complaint. Martha does not simply ask for help; she asks Christ to affirm her own agitation.

In contrast, Mary, “sitting at the feet of Jesus, was listening to His word.” Her attitude is one of discipleship, silence, and receptivity. She sits at the feet of the Lord, like a disciple before the teacher. For this reason, Christ says that she has chosen “the good portion.” The good portion is not inactivity; it is the priority of communion with God. Before a person offers work, he is called to receive the word. Before he serves, he must listen.

Here precisely the person of the Theotokos is revealed. The Panagia is, in the fullest sense, the Mary of the Church: the one who heard the word of God and kept it. At the Annunciation, she answers: “Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Her life is complete acceptance of the divine will. This is not passive acceptance, but free cooperation. The Panagia offers her entire being to God, and in this way she becomes the dwelling place of Him whom nothing can contain.

The second part of the passage sheds even more light on the meaning of the feast. A woman from the crowd blesses the mother of Jesus because of her biological relationship to Him. Christ does not reject the blessing; He raises it higher: “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” In other words, the true blessedness of the Theotokos is not exhausted by the fact that she gave birth to Him according to the flesh, but is found in the fact that she heard, believed, kept, and lived the word of God.

The Dormition, therefore, is not simply the end of the earthly life of the Panagia. It is the seal of a life that had already become an entire “yes” to God. The Theotokos passes into Life because her whole being had been united with the Giver of Life. Her “good portion” is not taken away from her, because what is founded upon Christ is not destroyed even by death.

Thus, today’s passage calls us to honor the Most Holy Theotokos and to follow her holy example. We are called to hear the word of God, to keep it in the heart, and to transform it into life. Then our own service will cease to be agitation and will become the fruit of prayer and faith. The Theotokos reveals to us that true blessedness belongs to those who become a dwelling place of the word of God.
